MPNRF's Partnership with LLS

The MPN Research Foundation began in 2000 with a goal of finding a cure or better treatments for the blood cancers known as Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and myelofibrosis). Founded by patients, for patients, the Foundation has awarded over nine million dollars for MPN research. The Foundation selects and reviews grants based on their potential value to patients while ensuring that the most funds possible are spent directly on MPN research. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. These organizations have joined forces to stop or reverse fibrosis with the MPN Challenge (formerly the MF Challenge).

As patient advocacy organizations, MPNRF and LLS receive many calls and emails from MPN patients, and over many years we recognize common threads. Patients with ET, PV or MF have concerns about symptoms, treatment options, and quality of life, but their most pressing concern is prognosis – will my disease progress, will I get MF, will I transform to AML? Our most harrowing calls are with MF patients, who face the bleakest prognosis and the greatest fears.

The emergence of new treatments for MF patients is encouraging, but until there is proof that these emerging treatments actually change the course of the disease, these fears will remain. MF will kill many of our patients, and bone marrow fibrosis will be its weapon. We at MPNRF and LLS seek to change this future.

Through the MF Challenge we have funded 8 grants. Moving on in 2014, we seek to fund more projects through the MPN Challenge that offer novel ideas for stopping or reversing fibrosis and follow up with concept grants for proposals that show the most promise. By joining forces we amplify the strengths of each organization and focus them on myelofibrosis, where they can have maximum impact.
